Behind the Scenes: What Happens During a Bridal Appointment
Walking into their bridal appointment, many brides don’t know what to expect. Whether it’s your first (or tenth) time shopping for bridal, every boutique operates differently. If you’re feeling anxious, know that it’s completely normal! We’re here to help calm your nerves and show you what to expect at the Formal Niche.
Before You Arrive
We love helping walk-in brides find the dress of their dreams! But if you’re nervous about shopping or browsing during our busy times, we recommend booking an appointment to ensure a more individualized experience.
Our appointment options
At The Formal Niche, we offer four different types of appointments:
Meet Cute (Free) – Our free appointment option allows you to bring up to 4-6 people with you for one hour. Please note that this option does not guarantee the Something Blue bridal suite for your appointment.
Love at First Sight ($47) – This paid option guarantees a 1-hour and 30-minute appointment in our bridal suite. We offer champagne or sparkling juice for you and up to 6 guests. You’ll also receive a garment bag and swag bag.
Happily Ever After ($97) – Our next tier comes with a 1-hour and 30-minute appointment in our bridal suite. We provide both champagne/juice and Signature Cookies for you and up to 8 guests. You’ll also take home a robe or pj set, garment bag, and swag bag.
Fairy Tale ($250) – This magical option allows a 2-hour private appointment outside of regular business hours. We offer champagne, Signature Cookies, and snacks for you and up to 10 guests. You’ll also receive a robe or pj set, garment bag, and swag bag. Plus, we’ll take 10% off the veil and accessories you purchase during your appointment time.
While our paid appointments come with amazing perks, it’s important to note that we treat all our brides with the same kindness, respect, and enthusiasm. Whether you’re just stopping in to gather inspiration or are determined to find your dream gown, we celebrate you!
Scheduling your appointment
Once you’re ready to schedule, you’ll select the “Schedule Your Appointment” option on our website. You’ll select the appointment category and whichever option you’ve chosen. After you input your availability, you’ll select your preferred slot from our calendar of available times. After that, provide your name, contact details, and any other information you’d like us to know! Once you’ve booked, we’ll send you a confirmation email (be sure to check your spam folder).
So you’re all booked and ready for your bridal appointment…what comes next? A little preparation goes a long way for a hassle-free appointment. Wearing seamless, nude undergarments and a strapless bra (if you so choose) helps you envision the dress as it will look on your wedding day. Do some research to determine your ideal budget, and remember that accessories and alterations factor into that cost. For your entourage, bring people who will remain positive and supportive during the appointment, and, most importantly, respect your vision.

Meeting Your Stylist
When you walk in our door, your bridal stylist will greet you and your entourage. They’ll show you to your fitting room area (or our Something Blue Bridal Suite) and make sure you’re comfortable. They’ll offer the treats that come with your package and explain the rules of “Bridal Bingo” while your party gets settled.
If you haven’t already explained your vision, your stylist will ask questions to “get to know” your wedding. Whether you’ve got a color-coded binder full of vendors or a vague notion of a “vibe,” we’re here to help! Your stylist will also ask your dress size (for bridal, we typically suggest a “two numbers above your pant size”) and your budget. We’ll ask about your style preferences and what you’re open to trying. This step helps us select gowns that fit your wedding style…and that you’re sure to love.
Shopping the Floor
At the Formal Niche, we encourage you and your entourage to select gowns from our shop floor. Though we mainly offer consignment gowns, you are also welcome to choose from our selection of orderable styles. Once you and your party have browsed the floor, your stylist will also pick out a few gowns. Some of these may match your vision, but some might seem completely unexpected. We believe it’s important to try many different silhouettes, even ones you may not have envisioned. That’s a great way to learn what works best for you, your body, and your style. Many times, the dress you thought you wanted ends up lacking that “wow” factor, and the “underdog” dress ends up being “the one.” Above all, our stylists want you to feel beautiful, radiate confidence, and find the dress of your dreams.
Finding “The One”
Many brides believe that finding “the dress” comes with a tearful “say yes” moment. While that’s true for some, brides react in many possible ways when they meet their dream dress. When you find “the dress,” it might be an emotional experience. Or you may feel overwhelmed with happiness and excitement—no tears involved. Or you might feel low on emotion but high in confidence that this is the one. Sometimes it takes a veil, a cape, or stunning sleeves to take a dress from “I don’t know…” to “I’m in love!” Whatever “the dress” looks like, it’s time to celebrate that you found “the one”! But what if none of the dresses you tried spoke to you? Don’t feel bad leaving empty-handed. Whether you need to sleep on it or continue your search elsewhere, we support you! We hope you meet your perfect match.
After You Say Yes
If you’ve found your dress, we’ll discuss alterations after your appointment. If Cheryl, our alterationist, is present, she’ll talk you through any changes to your gown. If she’s not here, you can schedule an alterations appointment or walk in within her availability. When you check out, you’ll pay for the dress and the alterations quote.
If you chose a consignment gown, good news: your dress is ready to go (minus alterations)! We’ll keep it at the shop until the alterations are done. If you chose an orderable style, we’ll need to order your size, and alterations will begin after we’ve received the correct size.
Alterations timeline
At The Formal Niche, we determine alterations timelines based on the event date. So if your event is sooner, your alterations will begin sooner. But if you’ve got a while until the event, work on your dress won’t begin until we’ve finished dresses for upcoming events. We aim to complete your alterations by the one-month mark before your event, so don’t worry! We’ve got you covered.

“I booked the ‘Love at First Sight’ option because I wanted that full ‘dress shopping’ experience. I’ve been watching Say Yes to the Dress since high school, and I used to work at a formalwear shop, so to say I’ve dreamed of this day is an understatement. And with three months until my wedding, I knew I had today to find it.”
