What is Consignment?
Consignment in bridal and formalwear involves individuals or designers providing wedding gowns, prom dresses, or other formal attire to a boutique for resale. The boutique (consignee) displays these items in-store, handling marketing, customer inquiries, and sales transactions. When a dress or accessory sells, the original owner (consignor) receives an agreed percentage of the sale price, while the boutique keeps a commission. This arrangement benefits both parties: the consignor can earn from previously purchased or unused formal attire, while the boutique offers clients a wider selection at various price points, often including unique, high-quality pieces.
Additionally, consignment is an eco-friendly choice, as it promotes the reuse and recycling of fashion items, helping to reduce waste in the bridal and formalwear industry. At The Formal Niche, we make consignment easy! Here are answers to our most frequently asked questions.
No, we do not purchase dresses for cash or accept trade-ins. We operate exclusively on a consignment basis.
We price your dresses based on their current market value. We research the brand, style, and condition of your gown, looking at what similar dresses are selling for new and used. Your dress will be priced fairly to reflect its value in today’s market.
If your dress does not sell and you have opted for it to be returned, you will have 10 days after your contract ends to schedule a pick-up. If your dress is not retrieved within that time frame, it will either be forfeited to the store or donated to a local organization.
You can bring your items in anytime during business hours. While we prefer you stop by during the week, we understand Saturdays may be more convenient for some. No appointment is necessary!
